Reasons Teen Disrespect Is On The Rise Essay Though cultures have many differences there have been a few traits that have united them across the spans of time and geographical area. Many of these traits have even been included in religious doctrine or social and moral laws. In western philosophy and religions the concept of respect has help a high place, allowing a clear distinction between those who have experience and answers to those who are young and naive. Religions such as Christianity and Mormonism stress greatly that the young should respect the elderly, while the Judaic religion provides a strict consequence, should this command be broken. By Old Testament law, the disrespectful child was to be taken to the town council, and then promptly stoned to avoid the spread of the sin and to keep ?God?s Chosen? pure. In recent times the respect that teenagers have shown for the elderly has decreased significantly, this trend has become extremely apparent in the 1980?s and 90?s. Though modern social guidelines do not dictate the killing of a disrespectful youth, it is still considered something that must be stopped. High school students have always been notorious for their lack of respect for authority. Many have wondered how these changes occur, most children are respectful at a young age but seem to ?change over night? into a youthful teenager who is often disrespectful to those around them. Studies done in recent years have shown that society, media, and the physical changes that a teenager undergoes may all be responsible for this metamorphosisThe severe changes teenagers endure are often seen as one of the key reasons for their disrespect. Adolescents undergo startling changes both physically and psychologically through out the process known as puberty. Hormones, the biological chemical responsible for several of the body?s functions, have been found to increase drastically during puberty. Because of this increase, teenagers tend to have clouding judgment and a feeling invincibility. This often leads to them perceiving themselves as the equal of their parents, grandparents, and teachers. The problem of disrespect begins with this perceived equality for it is difficult to respect someone who is an equal, or even a perceived equal.Teenagers also seem to learn who to respect, and who not to respect, based on the culture they are placed in. As the child grows in a society the norms and values of that culture are taught to the child. Things such as saying thank you when given a gift, chewing food with a closed mouth, and even what people deserve respect are all controlled by cultural values. One institution society uses to teach these values to the teenagers are schools, allowing a large group of teenagers to interact semi-independently, in a relatively controlled environment. In recent years however, the moral role of the schools has declined, depriving the teenagers of the guidance they require. This lack of guidance leaves the students to build off values that they are taught else where. Teenagers also learn what to respect from other sources, such as movies. The Movie Industry has become a substantial part of a teenagers life. With hundreds of movies each years fighting for a large audience each movie seeks to appeal to the teenagers by showing them something they desire, or can relate to. Frequently this means casting teenagers in what otherwise would be adult roles, movies now depict teenagers as independent, self-serving characters that can save the world, take lives, engage in sexual acts, or as characters that can beat the odds in death defying situations. Poverty and Homelessness Essay Over the years , we as a society have become insensitive to the major issues faced by the mankind and homelessness is one of those major issues. Millions of people, including children, families , babies ,veterans and elderly live day after day without food, water or a roof over their heads. People who are mentally ill also have it tough on the streets, which can be extremely confusing to them and dangerous to the rest of society. As the con side of this argument, it can be understood as a problem that must be solved soon and therefore should be addressed as major crises affecting the society. At the same time, I argue that it is not as big problem as it is made out to be. There are various reasons for why people are homeless and some of those reasons ,along with their effects as well as solutions are mentioned in this essay. The majority of homeless people are adult men. Many of these men choose to be homeless because that is the free lifestyle they want to live. Same is the case with many women and children. Homelessness life is not always as bad as it seems. Homelessness people have all the time in the world, they are free to do whatever they like without any restrictions. They can read books, take walks, go for hang outs and enjoy nature. There are the drawbacks of diminished health, alcohol and drugs and looks of disdain from other people, but any homeless people just live in their own world and enjoy it. According to my thought, homeless should just be allowed to live their lives. Second reason that can be considered as important for homelessness is that there are those people who do not make the choice of becoming homeless, but are forced of becoming homeless because of economic issues. For example, as the population is increasing at a very fast pace , it is getting difficult for everyone to find a job and as a result, unemployment prevails which directly leads to the issue of becoming homeless. There are the people that we need to help out financially. Thirdly, there are some people who make the choice of being homeless because they simply do not want to support themselves, these are the people that need to receive professional medical help. Our society can be seen as adversely affected by the problem of homelessness. Having no home can make it extremely hard for adults to get or keep work, being one of the causes of poverty which in addition to helping to maintain homelessness also helps turn households trying to be useful rospering citizens into victimized anti-social problem households breeding further poverty, drug addiction, alcoholism and crime. Homeless young people are much more likely to be not in education. In other words, the homeless people can not get access to a better education because they do not have the resources to fulfill their basic needs. Poor qualification, in turn, act as a barrier in finding job, as a result, future of the homeless people is spoiled. Poverty and desperation means some homeless people turn t o crime. This further decreases the chances of them finding work and escaping their situation. Homeless young people are more likely to be the victims of crime. Their situation puts them at risk of exploitation, particularly if they become homeless at a very young age. Homelessness has a huge effect on an individual’s both physical and emotional health. Homeless men and women suffer from cold that they can not get rid of because they have no access to medicine, food and warm housing. They also are more at risk for dependency on drugs and alcohol and contracting HIV. They suffer from vitamin deficiencies and often don’t get adequate sleep. Homeless people have no housing to protect themselves from physical violence and even rape. These can lead to emotional breakdowns that lead them to become institutionalized. In sum, homelessness is not a big issue for those who desires to be homeless, for instance , people who do not want to have social contacts with others , but , for the persons who are forced to become homeless ,it is a huge problem and needs to be solved. There seems to be two main elements in saving a homeless person. The government needs to help homeless people get back on their feet. They need to make sure also that homeless people do not abuse systems such as social security and housing. Also, homeless need to get up on their own two feet, for themselves. Finding jobs, such as selling â€Å"Homeless Newspapers† seems to be a common first step. To illustrate, a vendor gets the papers for free or low cost, sells them for something like a dollar and keeps 55 cents, or a little more than a half, for each sold. The homeless can then use this money to pay for food, shelter and other basic necessities. Many shelters exist whose primary goal is to provide homeless with a job and home. We help these people everyday without knowing as a proportion of our taxes go back to the community in many forms and one form is helping out the homeless. One can also help the homeless by volunteering at shelters. So if the government is willing to help get the homeless roused into the wanting of a better life, and they wish to follow through, then I suppose we could find a better, faster way to end the nation’s problem of homelessness.

The play by Murray Shisgal, The Typists, is about two people who work during their lifetime at a firm, typing the addresses of prospective customers. Through their speeches we see that the play talks about hopelessness, routine and fear of change. Most of the character’s motives are explained through the Freudian concept of superego, or, in other words, the part of people’s psique which is related to discipline, judgment of the society, guilt, pride, self-discipline and self- punishment. In this paper, I’ll make an attempt to illustrate these themes in the play.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Hopelessness is seen through the setting. At the rear of the stage there is a window and through it the sun streams â€Å"as the play progresses it fades imperceptibly until, at the end, the room is almost in complete darkness.† Apart from the obvious reason, which would be the course of a day, the sun, here, is a symbol of glory, success and faith. We can interpret it by saying that at the beginning of the play, when Paul and Sylvia are still young, â€Å"at twenty-odd years of age†, they still have hopes of a better future. It is shown through Paul’s ambition of working and studying law to guarantee a better living, and Sylvia’s intentions of marrying and abandoning her family. As the time goes we notice only disappointments and attempts to change their lives. These attempts are not successful as they are hopeless, shown by their fear to abandon the firm and conquer a better job. Working in that office is for them the only way of livi ng.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Another theme that appears in the play is the routine. Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot explores the same theme. Habit is something that makes us feel secure. It is a guarantee that we will be alive the next day as the present has a succession, which is to wake up next morning and do everything again. Since Paul starts working in the office, Sylvia passes to him her routine. Nothing can be alternated. She tells him: â€Å"strike each key with the same steady rhythm (†¦) don’t move your head, keep your eyes on the material you’re typing†. The steady rhythm to strike the keys, the expressions â€Å"don’t move† and â€Å"keep† refer to lack of alternation and it means routine. Not only this, when Paul suggests to break Sylvia’s habit of having lunch always at 1p.m. and have it at 1:30p.

It is concerned with managing the process that converts inputs in the forms of materials, labour, and energy into outputs in the form of goods and/or services. Operations management is about how organizations produce goods and services. Tesco sets its performance objectives with the following categories of people in mind; the first are the customers because these are the main people that bring in revenue to the organisation. Then there are the suppliers; the operations section depends on these people to perform adequately. (Tesco, 2007) There are also the employees; these are the people who carry out the operations and working conditions in the operations section must put this category in mind. The community is also affected by operation processes especially if the goods disseminated by the process affect the environment. Lastly, there are the shareholders who expect that the operations section is effective stock that they can be able to earn a higher return on their investments. All of the above groups have been included in the performance objectives of Tesco to a large extent. Some of these performance objectives include; (Slack, N. , et al. , 2007) Speed; Tesco recognises speed as one of the major performance objectives in operation. Speed in this case is the time spent between a request for a specific item by a customer and delivery time. The Company values this because customers can get what they require when they need it. This constitutes a respectable record and makes them come back for more business. It has been incorporated in its day to day services by andling customers in a fast manner when they are purchasing items at the store, store attendants are taught to be prompt. Secondly, when they are purchasing a product or service over the phone, customer assistants are to deliver First Call Resolution. Thirdly, when customers are online they are saving valuable time that may be wasted in queues to make payments or when trying to move from one aisle of the store to the next to find a particular item, they can simply do this by selecting the items they require from Tesco’s official Website. The product offered by any given company must meet international or local standards in order for it to be a quality good. This is important to a company for two main reasons. The first being if a product or service falls within the customer’s expectation, then they will be satisfied and will be willing to come back for the same. The company will therefore make more profits or generate more revenue. The second reason why quality is such an important performance objective is that it helps the company to achieve effectiveness through reduction of costs, increasing dependability and speed. This will occur if the goods are of good quality. The organisation will then be able to spend time on other aspects of production rather than correcting mistakes. (Slack, N. , et al. , 2007) Tesco ensure that all goods especially foodstuffs are in top notch conditions to ensure that they incorporate this performance objective. This is normally done by effective selection of suppliers for the company. Weiss & Mark, 1989) Besides this, Tesco ensures that goods do not sit too long on shelves or in the warehouse. To prevent the sale of substandard goods expiry dates are regularly checked and to ascertain the quality of the products Tesco performs audits on its suppliers to check; the capability of the factory: that hygienic conditions are incorporated in food preparation; the quality management systems of the supplier and the supply chain management. If these aspects are fulfilled then Tesco will conduct business with them and display their items in their stores. This means that only the best quality goods are chosen in this case. (Tesco, 2007) Cost; this is a performance objective that is largely dependent on the other performance objectives. If an operation is dependable, fast, flexible and full of quality then fewer resources will be spent trying to rectify mistakes. This will directly affect the finances needed and overall cost in the process. It can then be said that cost falls under the four other types of performance objective and it is best not to consider it in isolation. (Slack, N. , et al. 2007) By ensuring that all other performance objectives are met Tesco ensures that this performance objective is incorporated and therefore Tesco improves efficiency in all processes. Flexibility; this is essential in ensuring that operation processes are effective. With flexibility a company can adjust to changes in external factors that may require different aspects of the product. In relation to this, flexibility may come in a variety of forms. It may involve a change in the amount of products the company dispenses, this will normally occur after an external reason has prompted a reduction or increase in the amount of product. Flexibility also applies to the way products or services are delivered. This may be in various forms such as changes in delivery or payment systems used which are influenced by advances in technology and/or competitors. Lastly, flexibility may also mean a change in the types of products or services offered in relation to changing customer preferences. This performance objective is also essential in determining how some other internal factors flow. With a flexible operation system, responses within the organisation will be fast and the overall process will be more efficient. Enhanced flexibility will enhance dependability within an organisation because the speed will have been improved. Lastly, flexibility also affects the amount of revenue generated within the company as the way time is spent within the organisation is affected. (Slack, N. , et al, 2007) Tesco incorporates flexibility by continuously introducing new products in order to meet with changing customer preferences. An example would be the introduction of Tesco’s own product brand name. These products include nearly all foodstuffs and now clothing and electrical goods. To further expand Tesco now sell insurance and provide financial assistance with loans and credit cards. During certain times of the year, Tesco will increase the amount they stock of certain items to compete with demand. One such example is ice cream; this will be in large stock during summer months and low stock during the winter months. Tesco has also shown flexibility by the way it has been engaging in a number of mergers and expansion programs. Tesco has shown that it is flexible in terms of locations as it has a large number of stores found outside the UK. This was in response to increased globalisation and technological advancements. (Hogan, 1998) Dependability; this may be defined as an organisations ability to deliver goods, services and time. An organisation must establish as a dependable system in order to succeed. As a performance objective it is very important as it defines the image that the organisation presents to its customers and whether the customers will continue to purchase their goods or services. If the company is very dependable then their revenue will increase and vice versa if they are not dependable. Dependability brings stability to the organisation and means that resources can be spent on improvement instead of on fixing mistakes. (Slack, N. , et al, 2007) One way that Tesco has implemented dependability is by ensuring that its delivery system is top notch meaning that its customers get their goods on time, every time. (Weiss & Mark, 1989) This is especially in regard to provision of insurance. The Company makes sure that customers wait for too long, if applicants are not viable, then Tesco informs them as soon as possible so that they do not have to waste time waiting unnecessarily. To conclude, it can be seen that Tesco is an extremely successful organisation that has extracted the necessary resources to succeed from new technology and finances. Tesco’s operations management is very effective with a highly structured distribution chain for its products and services and a highly structured way of choosing its suppliers who ought to have ability to deliver.
